1. Assam Agricultural University
The seed of Assam Agricultural University (AAU) was sown way back in 1913 with the establishment of an agricultural research station at Karimganj in Barak Valley followed by another at Titabar in 1923 in Brahmaputra Valley.  Although the stations conducted research and training, the need for an agricultural and a veterinary college was felt immediately after independence leading to the establishment of the Assam Agricultural College at Jorhat and the Assam Veterinary College at Nagaon in 1948. Later on, in 1969, the Assam Agricultural University was established embracing both these Colleges and shifting the Veterinary college from Nagaon to the present location at Khanapara, Guwahati .
2. Assam University
Assam University came into existence through Assam (Central) University Act, 1989(Established under an Act of Parliament) . It was  established in 1994,since then  the University is steadily becoming  an excellent centre of learning.The campus, situated in Dargakona, about 20 kms from  Silchar, is set amid sprawling hillocks, a typical landscape in the  North East. The campus  in an area of  600 acres surrounded by lakes and mountains provides  an ideal environment for academic pursuit. Drawing its 300 plus faculty from many disciplines, from all over the country, the university sustains a multidisciplinary approach to higher education.
3.Gauhati University
The first public demand was made at the annual session of the Assam Association held at Sivasagar in 1917. In 1940 the Government appointed S. K. Bhuyan as Special Officer with the task of collecting relevant information on the selection of site and related matters. The university was established by an act of the State Legislature: the Gauhati University Act 1947 (Assam Act, XVI of 1947) of the government of Assam in 1948.
4. Krishna Kanta  Handique State Open University
KKHSOU, established under the provision of the KKHSOU, Act’ 2005 enacted by the Govt. of Assam & published in the Assam Gazette (extraordinary) dt 29/9/05 has been recognized by the Distance Education Council, New Delhi vide letter no. DEC/Misc/07/5957 dated 03/10/07. The University Grants Commission vide its letter No. F.9-13/2008(CPP-I) dated 18th March, 2009 also has empowered the University to award degrees under Section 22 of UGC Act, 1956. It is the fourteenth of its kind along with IGNOU and the only state Open University in the whole of NE India. The university is recognized by the University Grants Commission and Distance Education Council, Govt. of India. The headquarters of the University is located at Housefed Complex, Last Gate, Dispur, Guwahati. The university started functioning with the joining of Prof. Srinath Baruah, former Professor, Deptt. of Economics, Gauhati University, as the Vice-Chancellor.


5.Dibrugarh University
Dibrugarh University, the easternmost University of India was set up in 1965 under the provisions of the Dibrugarh University Act, 1965 enacted by the Assam Legislative Assembly. It is a teaching-cum-affiliating University with limited residential facilities. The University is situated at Rajabheta, five kilometres to the south of the premier town of Dibrugarh in the northeast India. Dibrugarh, which is one of the commercial and industrial hubs of the northeastern region, also occupies a unique place in the field of Art, Literature and Culture. Dibrugarh district known internationally as a rich tea producing district is also known for its rich reserve of minerals like coal, oil and natural gas. Its diverse flora and fauna makes it an exciting region from the point of view of environment and ecology. The various tribes which inhabits this district presents a polychromatic ethnic mosaic and makes it a very attractive destination for researchers from all over the globe.

6.Tezpur University
Tezpur University was established by an Act of Parliament in 1994. The objects of this Central University as envisaged in the statutes are that it shall strive to offer employment oriented and interdisciplinary courses to meet the local and regional aspirations and the development needs of the state of Assam and also offer courses and promote research in areas which are of special and direct relevance to the region and in emerging areas in Science and Technology...
